An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International Americus, Georgia |
Our MissionHabitat for Humanity in Ashtabula County is a Christian Ministry building homes in a community of faith, hope and love, in partnership with God and humanity.
In 1992, Habitat Ashtabula County was incorporated as a locally run, 501(c)3 tax exempt affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. As an ecumenical Christian housing organization, we build and renovate simple, decent, affordable houses. Free labor is provided by Habitat volunteers and the Partner Families who qualify for the homes. Partner Families assume a no interest, no profit mortgage for the materials cost of the house and are restricted from selling the house for ten years. Average materials cost of a 1,070 square foot, three bedroom, energy efficient house is currently $55,000. Mortgage payments are returned to our revolving Fund for Humanity and used to build more house.
Our funding comes primarily from local sources and includes contributions made by individuals, churches, foundations, businesses and associations. Additional funding for our houses comes through local municipality CHIP grants and First Energy/The Illuminating Company Foundation grants.
Since 1992, we have built or rehabbed 12 houses throughout the county, in the City of Ashtabula, the City of Conneaut, Jefferson Village, Lennox-New Lyme Township and Rock Creek Village.
Did You Know?
Substandard housing is a plague affecting many families, communities and nations. All those involved in Habitat for Humanity – be they a homeowner, a volunteer or a donor – become
links in the chain of real solutions to the real problem of inadequate
housing. Partner Families are chosen on the basis of need, willingness to
help build the home and ability to pay a 0% mortgage note.
In Ashtabula County, a one story Habitat house costs a minimum of $55,000 to build, excluding the cost of the land. Homeowner and volunteer “sweat equity” make up labor costs.
A minimum-wage worker in Ohio would have to work 89 hours each week to afford a two-bedroom apartment at 30% of his or her income |
